Cycle Prague to Vienna - Guided

Cycle Prague to Vienna - Guided

Trip Highlights

  • Cycling through the Czech countryside through woods, the Djie national park and past the Trebon Ponds
  • Prague, Cesky Krumlov and the renaissance towns of Trebon and Telc
  • Crossing the border into Austria and arriving in Vienna
  • Interesting regional cuisine and a good selection of restaurants for dining out

Trip Summary

The Greenways cycle trails are a collection of routes linking Prague and Vienna. This specially designed trip follows the section south of Prague, from the hills of Cesky Krumlov to the east along the Austrian border. Passing numerous medieval towns where castles and impressive squares dominate, the route offers both diversity as it traverses national parks and wine country and a full appreciation of this captivating pocket of the Czech Republic. Crossing the border at historical Mikulov the route heads south through Austrian vineyards, fields and villages before reaching the cultural city of Vienna.

Suitability

The cycling distances range from 25 to 96km over flat to undulating terrain. The rides follow mostly well surfaced tarmac lanes and secondary roads with little traffic and a few dirt tracks. Inevitably, near the larger towns there is more traffic. It is considered suitable for cyclists with a good level of fitness. We recommend that you familiarise yourself with road cycling in light traffic in order to participate comfortably. *For safety reasons, we insist that cycle helmets are worn whilst cycling.

Itinerary

Transfer from Prague to Cesky Krumlov (175km), free time for sightseeing in Cesky Krumlov, one of Europe’s best preserved medieval towns. Welcome briefing with the group and dinner at a restaurant.

Meals:  D

The first cycling day leads you through the beautiful hilly landscape surrounding Cesky Krumlov. As you near the Trebon area, the trail gradient begins to level off. A scenic ride through a picturesque landscape ends in Renaissance town of Trebon, also well-known as a major spa resort. In Trebon you can visit the Schwarzenberg Tomb.

Meals:  B,D

Optional tour of Trebon chateau in the morning. The trail winds past many ponds and man-made lakes, typical of this region, to Perslak, the most northern point of Austria. You follow the border with Austria on the Greenways trail passing through Nova Bystrice. From Nova Bystrice the trail takes you through the forests of the National Park called Czech Canada. The day ends in Telc, a Renaissance town registered on the UNESCO Cultural Heritage List. Houses on the main square in Telc, with facades decorated with typically renaissance graffiti, form the best-preserved Renaissance square in the Czech Republic.

Meals:  B,D

Optional tour of Telc chateau in the morning. Todays cycle takes you through several charming villages typical for this area of the country. We will cycle gently through the region of South Moravia. We will stay overnight in Vranov which is situated near a dam.

Meals:  B,D

Cycling on the Greenways trail the route takes you alongside the river Dyje and next to the southern Czech border with Austria. This very beautiful trail leads through the national park of Dyje to Znojmo, the gateway to the wine producing region of South Moravia.

Meals:  B,D

This flatland region is a traditional vine-growing area and there are many wine cellars. We continue the cycle to arrive in Mikulov, a town with a rich history, a beautiful castle and an historical square. Check-in to your hotel in late afternoon, leisure time in the evening.

Meals:  B,D

You cross the border at the Mikulov border Checkpoint and the rest of the day is spent in Austria. The ride in Austria is, to begin, very similar to the Czech section. There are vineyards, fields and small villages along the trail. Experienced bikers can reach the Vienna hotel by bike. Otherwise we recommend finishing the cycling part of the trail in Poysdorf (25km) or in Mistelbach (48km) and travelling by car or minibus to Vienna. Overnight Vienna – dinner not included. Note: The support vehicle with bikes and the tour leader leave Vienna on Day 7 in the early afternoon. You can return by support vehicle to Prague for free and therefore spend the last night in Prague (must be advised at time of booking) or stay on in Vienna.

Meals:  B

The tour ends after breakfast around 9am in Vienna and individual departure.

Reviews

The bike trip was terrific! Guides were great – thoughtful, responsible, creative, trustworthy, and very strong bikers. Equipment was fine. Group members were easy and supportive of each other, and the countryside was beautiful. The hills were a challenge, but mostly manageable. I was often exhausted at the end of the day, but the alchemy of food and sleep each night did the trick, and I’ve come back in better shape than when I left.

Most memorable moments: The guides patience and kindness along with an amazing sense of completion. This trip was a surprise 50th birthday gift from my husband to join my long time friend on an adventure. It sure was a surprise! It was challenging, exhilarating, exhausting, informative and motivating. The guides were exceptional and helped with every minor detail. I highly recommend this trip, but take the trip advice "the fitter and more prepared you are the more you will enjoy the journey" Thanks UTracks.
