Trip Highlights

  • Walk coastal and mountain paths with stunning scenery
  • Discover archaeological sites only accessible on foot
  • Visit hidden bays
  • Experience genuine cultural exchange with the local people
  • Soak up the camaraderie of life on board a gulet

Trip Summary

Cruising from Marmaris, around the Gocek Islands and on to Fethiye, this unique program offers the opportunity to see the best of the Turkish Lycian coast from sea and on foot. Walk along tracks still used by shepherds today, most of which are so remote they can only be accessed from the sea. There's plenty of time to relax and enjoy all that cruising along this stunning coastline offers. In the evening stay on board a traditional Turkish Gulet which will cruise from bay to bay as you walk along the coast. If you feel like relaxing and not walking, then just stay on board and enjoy the view! The Captain and crew take excellent care of you ensuring you have great food and the best of Turkish hospitality.

Suitability

The walking is introductory to moderate (2) grade with daily walks of around 2-5 hours per day. There are some steep sections over loose trails during the walk and such sections of the trail require care. Some sections of the trail are quite exposed so good hats and sunscreen are a must. The accent is on keeping a steady pace with time to stop and take photos (subject to weather conditions). You will need a reasonable level of fitness to participate fully in this adventure.

Itinerary

On arrival in Marmaris, make your way to the boat (details provided) - we are happy to arrange airport transfers for you - supplement applies. Following dinner on board, where you will meet your crew, guide and fellow travellers, you can also take the opportunity to explore this bustling resort, whether it's shopping or enjoying the party atmosphere of the nightlife on Bar Street or just having a quiet evening on the boat, or a Turkish bath.

There will be a chance to swim in the afternoon before we sail to a secluded bay where we cast anchor for the night. 2) Cruise to Paradise Island, where we discover the Nimara Caves which were inhabited more than 20,000 years ago. This scenic walk finishes with a steep descent to a wonderful beach where we rejoin the gulet for lunch. There will be a chance to swim in the afternoon before we sail to a secluded bay where we cast anchor for the night.

Our morning starts with a walk to the village of Candir where we board a river boat down the narrow waterways of the Dalyan river to see the amazing ruins at Kaunos with its rock hewn tombs built into the sheer cliff face hundreds of feet high in around 400BC. Following our time at the ruins we can bathe in the hot thermal baths or take a mud bath which according to local legend is said to knock 10 years from your age! Later we visit the protected Iztuzu beach, where you can enjoy the beautiful sandy beach. With its high mountains this place of considerable beauty is known locally as Turtle Beach as it is an important breeding ground for Caretta caretta loggerhead sea turtles.

The day begins with a drive up to the impressive ancient city of Tlos, considered one of the most important Lycian religious centres. It was here that the Greek mythological hero and his winged flying horse Pegasus are said to have lived. Set high up in the hills behind Fethiye, with dramatic views to the sea, the ancient city has a series of temple type tombs cut out of the rock, a stadium and houses. We continue on to Kayaköy, a Greek village that was deserted in 1923 following the exchange of peoples between Turkey and Greece. The walking trail, the Lycian Way, traverses through this village and again, there are some scenic highlights to be had. We stop for lunch amongst the ruins to feel the atmosphere of this abandoned village which was the inspiration for Louis de Berniere's Birds Without Wings. If we have time in this very full day, we finish with a short walk down from Kayakoy to Fethiye. During September, we may be able to include a visit to Saklikent Gorge (weather permitting). Overnight Fethiye.
