Sherpa was founded 30 years
ago; long before adventure travel became as widely accepted as
it is today, and long before the internet. We are professional
tour operators rather than an internet travel site. Since our first offering in 1973 of a month in Nepal
including flights for less than $500 (alas no longer available!),
we have adapted and adjusted to our clients' needs. Retreating
from some areas as the mass market encroaches, Sherpa is constantly
seeking new approaches and destinations.
At present 75 per cent of our clients come to us through recommendation
or because they enjoyed their last holiday with us so much. Our
target is that 100 per cent of our clients come to us without the need to
advertise, and that is your guarantee of a friendly service and an
enjoyable holiday. We hope you will be joining us this year.

Self guided walking & cycling
holidays may still be regarded as something of an innovation
but more than ten years have now passed since we offered our first self guided
holidays. The freedom and flexibility of going when you want for
as long as you want and at your own pace has certainly proved to
be the way many people prefer to enjoy their hill walking.
Itineraries are polished continuously to ensure that our
self guided travellers can enjoy the hills in security. Our own
leaders, local representatives and most significantly our clients
have all contributed to our trail guides over the years to make
them the definitive guide to the areas we visit. And the research
and development continues every day.
We provide holidays for walkers first and foremost, so the
integrity of the trails is of paramount importance. We try to preserve
the linear trail, moving on each day rather than being based in
hotels for two or three days at a time. Booking hotels on a one
night basis and moving luggage every day costs a little more, but
it makes for more interesting walking routes which we hope will
not only be more enjoyable, but offer a sense of achievement as
well.
Our guided walks take you to the high mountains. They
are for those who want to enjoy the mountain ambience in the
company of like minded travellers; for those who are committed
walkers who relish the prospect of exploring off the beaten track,
surmounting every pass and trekking unaided from horizon to
horizon.
The classic ingredients are spectacular scenery, a bit of a
challenge, and a sense of achievement at the end of the trail.
However, our walks are by no means the preserve of the super-fit. There are
trails to suit all levels of experience, many well within the
capabilities of any normally fit and healthy individual.
We dont believe in roughing it for the sake of it. The trails
are much more fun without a heavy pack to carry, so we provide
vehicles, pack animals or porters to move the baggage on whereever the terrain permits.
If you want to get deep into the mountains you have to camp, but
this can be done in style, with mess tents, tables, stools and as
many creature comforts as can be mustered. You can even have a
specially baked birthday cake at 20,000ft in the Himalayas if you
so wish!
Not all tours rely on camping; often where there is a village inn
or a pension we use it, and many of our walkers enjoy memorable
evenings over a well stocked table in superb mountain villages.
Our groups range from six to fifteen in number and have an
international flavour. While many come from Britain you will also
find North Americans, Australians and Europeans who enjoy their
mountain travel the Sherpa way.
