Walking Holidays in Gomera: Round Island walk

A Circular Island Walk

Due to its volcanic origins the island’s scenery is dramatic, mountainous, very beautiful and different from anywhere in Europe. Hiking on the island from high rocky mountains to cloud forest and banana plantations is an ideal way to see the real Gomera. It is a relaxed, unsophisticated island with a population of just 20,000 people living mostly in the capital, San Sebastian, or the villages of the north.
If you want the feeling of walking alone with nature then this is the place to be.

So rugged is the island that pre telephones, Gomerans developed a language of whistling to communicate from valley to valley. With a little practice you can place an order for an ice cold beer or a gin & tonic ready for your arrival. Just Whistle.

La Gomera’s highest point is the Alto de Garajonay at 1,450 metres and there is very little flat land at all due to the deep ravines (barrancos) that cut into the island from the central highlands.
You will be walking virtually round the island, having gone from a dry, rocky landscape through cultivated terraces and banana plantations, up to the rare laurisilva cloud forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

At a latitude of just 28° north of the equator, the temperature varies little between winter and summer, ranging from a winter average of 19° to 25° in the summer, although higher up in winter it will be a lot cooler. The benign climate allows the cultivation of a wide variety of exotic crops grown on ingeniously built terraces. It also means you can enjoy Gomera all year round.

7 nights/8 days - On La Gomera some of the most attractive accommodation does not have an official classification. Nights 1 & 7  are spent in a comfortable 3* hotel in the centre of of San Sebastian.  In Vallehermoso an Aparthotel provides modern spacious accommodation (bedroom, kitchen, dining area and bathroom) downstairs is the breakfast bar and reception. The evening meal is taken at a restaurant opposite. Two nights are spent in Chipude, situated near the top of the island at 1100m. In this small village accommodation is a little more simple, however, all rooms are en-suite at this family run hotel/restaurant/bar. The next two nights are spent in the small fishing village of Playa de Santiago in a well appointed apartment. It is on a quiet pedestrian lane close to the beach and many local restaurants.

10 nights/11 days - This itinerary offers 3 extra nights and 2 walks; one night and walk in  Hermigua and Vallehermoso and a rest day in Playa de Santiago.

An upgrade to a 4* hotel is possible in San Sebastian. The Parador hotel is in a fantastic position above town. Rooms are old Canarian style, there is a good sized pool, fantastic dining room and quality food. Prices on request.
