The largest of the Balearic Islands, Majorca, is a popular destination for European holidaymakers attracted by the island's golden sands. Step away from the package tours and piña coladas, and the big sister of the Balearic family offers another world entirely.

From the breath-taking snow-peaked caps of the Sierra de Tramontana mountain range and the blissful coastal walkways to the heavenly local tapas dishes and fascinating religious history, Mallorca offers much more to see and do than while away days by the beach or at the pool. When planning to go hiking in Mallorca head to the north-west side of the island. Hike up tall mountain peaks, meander alongside aromatic orange groves and admire sea views so beautiful you’ll swear you’re looking at a postcard.

As soon as the summer season comes to a close and most tourists catch their flights home, Mallorca transforms into a haven for lovers of the great outdoors. Although hiking in Mallorca has grown in popularity considerably in recent years, you’ll find most walking paths and routes are still relatively quiet. This means for you that you can enjoy your surroundings in a peaceful, tranquil atmosphere.

Mallorcan cuisine is hearty with plenty of grilled meats marinated in garlic and chunky stews loaded with fresh vegetables providing you with the perfect source of energy to get you through a day of walking. Since Mallorca is an island, seafood is also a common staple throughout. The island also makes some delicious liqueurs. ‘Herbas secos’ (dry herbs) and ‘herbas dulces’ (sweet herbs) are both based on aniseed and packed full of dried local herbs. Returning from your day of walking, you’ll find the local orange and almond liqueurs readily available in most bars and restaurants.

The Spanish island is one of our favourite picks for an active European holiday on foot and can be travelled from March until October.

Visas

Visas are not required for citizens of Australia, Canada, USA and New Zealand for up to 90 days in a period of 180 days for all Schengen countries (see www.schengenvisainfo.com/schengen-visa-countries-list/ for countries part of the Schengen). Please ensure your passport is stamped on arrival in the Schengen area. For all other nationalities and for longer stays in countries covered by the Schengen Agreement (Australian New Zealand, Canadian and US passport holders), please contact the relevant embassy. Stays of longer than 90 days in the Schengen area require a long stay visa for the country you are spending most time in. However long stay visas are unlikely to be issued unless there is a valid reason (eg. studying in country). Unfortunately we cannot assist in obtaining visas for long stays due to individual country visa requirements.

We suggest that you consult your doctor, local government inoculation centre or a travel medical specialist in order to get the most current advice regarding vaccination requirements for Mallorca.

Money and valuables should always be stored safely when travelling. Keep your passport with you at all times and do not leave it in your main luggage. You will need it to change money and check into hotels. Where safety deposit boxes are available, we recommend that you use them. Keep jewellery and valuables to a minimum.
