Trip Summary

The Turku archipelago is one of Finland's most stunning natural phenomena - 20,000 islands stretching out into the sea from the city of Turku in the southwest part of the country. Cycling a circular route around the main islands is made easy, and exciting by a system of local and free ferry services. Experience the peaceful nature of meandering by bike around rural Finland, the enchantment of the sea, the beauty of the inner islands, wholesome Finnish cooking and picturesque harbour villages. Our cycling tour starts in Turku, Finland's oldest city where you will enjoy a ride around the historic city with its medieval castle, cathedral and riverside paths. Enjoy the unique pleasure of hopping between the small islands off Finland's southwest coast.

The trip requires a reasonable to good level of fitness to fully participate in the cycling, with daily cycle distances from 14 to 68km (8.5 to 42mi) per day. It is generally easy, but with occasional rolling sections and 2 days of cycling over 50km/31mi.

Make your own way to Turku. The afternoon is free to explore the town with its medieval castle and cathedral. Stay overnight in 3* hotel which is centrally located in Turku. It is located within walking distance (approx 500m/1640ft) from the railway station. For dinner you will find a large selection of bars, cafes and restaurants in the centre of Turku. The hotel has a restaurant and 3 saunas. Morning sauna is included in the room price. Overnight Turku.

Collect your bike from the shop, only minutes from your hotel, then ride out into the countryside. Soon the island-hopping begins with a relaxing 45 minute ferry journey. After an invigorating day's ride, relax in the sauna at your harbourside accommodation, where you will stay in thatched cabins in Kustavi.

Today is the main island-hopping day with 5 ferry journeys, reaching the very heart of the archipelago. The tiny, peaceful island of Inio is the remotest part of the trip. Houtskar Island has some of the region's most challenging cycling, but you can rest on the 30min ferry ride to the next island! Sights on Korpoo Island are Korppoo greystone church from 14th century and Korppoo gard – the centre of Korppoo from the early 19th century with a unique architectural style. Our overnight stay is in a converted barn in Korppoo.

Meals:  B,D

Today you are free to cycle at your leisure. There are various possible circular routes that we suggest on Korpoo island or the neighbouring island of Nauvo. Whichever route you choose, beautiful archipelago landscapes and harbour villages await. Overnight in Korppoo. Tonight you are free to eat dinner at one of the local restaurants.

Meals:  B

Cross over to Nauvo, the main archipelago island. Nauvo village has a bustling harbour. Take the ferry from Nauvo harbour back to the mainland and continue by bike via Rymattyla. Rymattyla has 400 islands in the municipality. Cycle further to the Rymattyla village center. Visit St Jacob's church, several handicraft shops and even buy directly from the farmers. From Rymattyla you cycle back to Naantali. Overnight in Naantali at a small hotel in Naantali Old town. Bed & breakfast accommodation. Dinner is available nearby in a restaurant of your choice.

Meals:  B

You can either spend the morning in Naantali or start the cycle back to Turku. The ride to Turku is short, and you can then enjoy a ride around the historic city of Turku. Overnight in Turku. Morning sauna is included in the room price.

We have travelled to Finland to visit friends and wanted a self guided tour to use as an introduction to the country and this was a great choice. The ferries were fun, the accommodation was varied and proved to be good choices and we had some good times with some fellow travellers heading the same way. Turku and Naantali were a great introduction to Finland. Easy to get to via VR and the archipelago islands were relaxed.

Our bike trip was totally awesome. We are a freshly retired couple in our mid 60s looking for a challenge but not too much challenge. This bike trip fit our style completely. We loved studying the directions for each day, the night before, and having a mission each day. The accommodations were absolutely perfect & very interesting. Each place had it's own culture. The landscape was beautiful! The GPS map & written directions were perfect. We are ready to plan another self-guided bike trip.
