Walk the length of the Italian
Francigena Way from the
Swiss border deep in the Alps
to the Vatican City
Stretching from Canterbury in England to the historic Italian capital of
Rome, the 1900km "Via Francigena" or Road from France, dates back
to the 11th Century when pilgrims travelled across Europe on foot to
visit the city of Martyrdom of St Peter and St Paul in Rome. With the
modernisation of Europe and the shifting borders the Francigena Way
became obsolete. A recent revival of the route has helped it become one
of the most exciting pilgrimage trails in Europe today. Eight sections of
the trail in Italy, from the heights of the St Bernard Pass in the Alps to
the steps of St Peters in Rome, are available through UTracks, one of
the first to offer the full Italian route as supported self guided walks.
Slight deviations to the official trail are made to visit attractions too
close to the route to miss.
